GEO vs AEO vs AI SEO: What's the Difference?

AI SEO is the umbrella, AEO is about answer extraction, GEO is about being named and cited inside generated answers, and traditional SEO still runs the retrieval underneath all three.

GEO, AEO and AI SEO are overlapping names for one shift. Buyers now get answers from ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude instead of a list of links, and a brand has to be retrieved, extracted and named inside those answers to be considered. AI SEO is the umbrella discipline. Answer engine optimisation (AEO) concentrates on making information easy to identify, extract and present as an answer. Generative engine optimisation (GEO) concentrates on being mentioned, cited and recommended inside generated answers. Traditional SEO is the retrieval foundation the other three sit on.

Terminology varies across the market, and none of these terms is standardised by Google or by the companies running the engines. Ranking Atlas does all of this work as one discipline, so this guide is less interested in policing acronyms than in showing which problem each term describes, and which of those problems is stopping your brand from appearing.

GEO vs AEO vs AI SEO at a Glance

The four terms describe different layers of the same journey. Traditional SEO gets a page retrieved. AEO gets a passage extracted and presented as the answer. GEO gets a brand or source selected, cited and recommended inside a generated answer. AI SEO is the name for all of it together, measured across every AI-powered search surface rather than one results page.

What Is AI SEO?

AI SEO is the discipline of improving a brand's visibility across AI-powered search and discovery systems: Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and the AI-driven features inside conventional search. AI SEO covers retrieval, extraction, citation and recommendation together, and it is measured at the prompt level rather than the keyword level, which is what AI visibility tracking tools are built to do. Bought from an agency, AI SEO services cover all four layers in one programme rather than as separate projects.

The surfaces matter because each one behaves differently. Google AI Overviews and AI Mode sit on top of Google's index and lean on it heavily. ChatGPT and Perplexity blend live search with licensed feeds and their own retrieval. Gemini draws on Google's systems with its own synthesis layer. Claude answers from training and from retrieved sources when search is enabled. A brand can be strong on one surface and absent from another, which is why AI SEO is measured per engine, and why ChatGPT search visibility is tracked as its own metric rather than inferred from Google rankings.

Two things are often confused with AI SEO. The first is AI-assisted SEO: using language models to draft pages, cluster keywords, write titles or audit sites. Those are tools, and they can be useful, but the output is still judged by the same engines under the same rules. The second is content volume. AI SEO is not publishing more articles, with or without AI. A brand can publish weekly and never be named in a buyer's ChatGPT answer, because the engine decides whom to name from sources the brand does not own.

What Is AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation)?

Answer engine optimisation is the practice of structuring information so that an answer engine can identify the relevant passage, extract it and present it as the answer. AEO is content and structure work: answer-first paragraphs, question-led headings, a clear hierarchy, tables and lists where they help, explicit entities, and evidence with attribution.

In practice AEO means:

  • Answer-first content. The direct response appears in the first sentences under a heading, before the context and the caveats.
  • Question-led headings. Headings match the way people ask, so the engine can align a passage to a query.
  • Clear hierarchy. One subject per section, so a lifted passage still makes sense on its own.
  • Extractable passages. Short, self-contained definitions and claims that survive being quoted without the surrounding page.
  • Tables and lists where they help. Comparisons as tables, processes as numbered lists, and prose everywhere else.
  • Entity clarity. The company, product, category and people named explicitly and consistently, without ambiguous pronouns.
  • Evidence and attribution. Numbers with sources, claims with names attached, dates on anything that changes.

AEO predates generative AI. The term grew up around featured snippets, People Also Ask boxes and voice assistants, and the same structure now feeds AI Overview passages and direct-answer chat responses. AEO is not a Google product and there is no AEO ranking system. The limit is important: AEO decides how well a page performs once an engine has retrieved it. It does not decide whether the engine retrieves the page, and it does not decide whether the engine names your brand when three competitors were retrieved alongside it.

What Is GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation)?

Generative engine optimisation is the practice of getting a brand mentioned, cited, recommended and represented accurately inside answers generated by ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude. GEO works on the sources an engine retrieves for a buyer question and on the corroboration across those sources that makes an engine confident enough to name a brand.

GEO introduces a distinction that traditional SEO never needed: retrieval versus selection. When an engine receives a buyer question, it retrieves a set of sources, then selects which of them to cite and which brands to name. Those are different contests. AirOps' analysis of 548,534 pages across 15,000 prompts found that ChatGPT cites roughly 15% of the pages it retrieves. Being retrieved is necessary. Being selected is where visibility is decided, and selection depends on recurrence: engines tend to name the brands that appear across several independent retrieved sources and drop the ones supported by a single source, including the brand's own site.

That is why GEO is a reputation problem before it is a content problem. The accumulated pattern of a brand appearing across the sources engines trust has a name, citation equity, and it is built through editorial coverage, independent comparisons, reviews, community discussion and data that other people cite. Owned content sets the brand up to be retrieved and quoted. Independent corroboration gets the brand named.

GEO vs AEO vs AI SEO: What Is Actually Different?

The difference is the unit of work and the point in the pipeline where each discipline acts. SEO works on the page and ends at a click. AEO works on the passage and ends at an extracted answer. GEO works on the brand and its sources and ends at a citation, mention or recommendation. AI SEO is the whole pipeline, managed together and measured at prompt level.

Where each discipline acts
SEO
Pipeline:
Page → ranking → click
The contest:
The contest is between pages. Position is the metric.
AEO
Pipeline:
Answer → extraction → answer presentation
The contest:
The contest is between passages. Extraction is the metric.
GEO
Pipeline:
Brand or source → retrieval → selection → citation, mention or recommendation
The contest:
The contest is between reputations. Being named is the metric.
AI SEO
Pipeline:
Visibility across the entire AI-era search journey
The contest:
All three contests, run together and measured against one prompt panel.

Three consequences follow. A page can rank and never be extracted. A page can be extracted and the brand behind it never named. And a brand can be named in an answer built entirely from pages it does not own. That last case is the one most teams miss, and it is the reason GEO cannot be done from the website alone. The mechanics of what changed between traditional SEO and GEO, with the research behind each change, are in our GEO vs SEO analysis.

Does GEO Replace SEO?

No. GEO depends on SEO. AI engines retrieve most of their sources through search infrastructure: Ahrefs' study of 1.4 million ChatGPT prompts (April 2026) found 88% of the URLs ChatGPT cites are taken directly from search. A page that cannot be crawled, indexed and retrieved for the underlying query cannot be extracted or cited. What changed is the reward on top of retrieval, which moved from the click to the citation.

Google makes the same point from the other side. In May 2024 it said the model behind AI Overviews is integrated with its core web ranking systems, and its guidance on AI features says there are no additional requirements or special optimisations needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. "SEO is dead" is the wrong reading. The click economy on top of rankings is shrinking, and the citation economy inside answers is growing, but the inputs that earn retrieval have not changed. Where traditional SEO and GEO genuinely part ways is in synthesis, source selection and the unit of measurement, and each of those is covered in depth there.

Why Does Ranking on Google Not Guarantee AI Visibility?

Ranking gets a page retrieved. It does not get the page cited, and it does not get the brand recommended. BrightEdge data puts only around 17% of AI Overview citations on pages ranking in the organic top ten, and engines name the brands that recur across several independent retrieved sources. A top ranking on one owned page is a single vote, and on contested buyer questions it is usually outvoted.

Four gaps sit between a ranking and an AI recommendation:

  • Retrieval is not citation. Engines retrieve far more than they cite. The retrieval-citation gap is where most brands lose, and it is invisible in a rank tracker.
  • Ranking is not recommendation. An engine can cite your comparison page and still recommend the two competitors that page mentions, because they are corroborated elsewhere and you are not.
  • Owned content is not independent corroboration. Your site is one self-interested source. Muck Rack's 2026 analysis of 25 million AI citations found earned media accounts for 84% of them, against 0.3% for paid and advertorial content.
  • AI answers draw on several source classes at once. Editorial coverage, independent comparisons, review platforms, directories, community threads and owned pages all appear in the retrieved set. Semrush's cross-engine analysis found Reddit is the single most cited domain in AI responses. A strategy built only on the website competes in one of those classes.

The gap is widest on non-branded prompts. Ask an engine about your company by name and it retrieves your site and coverage about you. Ask the question a buyer who has never heard of you asks, and it retrieves the sources trusted on the category, where you may appear nowhere. Any visibility figure that blends the two hides the finding.

What Actually Improves GEO Visibility?

Four layers of work, in order of leverage. Make owned content retrievable and extractable. Build independent corroboration in the sources engines already cite. Establish an authentic entity and community presence. Measure visibility at prompt level against a baseline. The layers are the same whichever acronym you attach to them, and each one only pays off with the layer beneath it in place.

1. Make owned content retrievable and extractable

This is the SEO and AEO layer. Pages have to be crawlable, indexed and relevant to the buyer question, and then written so an engine can lift the answer. The founding academic research on generative engine optimisation (Aggarwal et al.) found that conventional SEO tweaks did little for visibility inside generated answers, while adding statistics, quotations and cited sources lifted a page's visibility in generative outputs by up to 40%. Answer the question in the first paragraph, use concrete numbers, name sources, structure comparisons as comparisons, and keep the company, product and category names consistent on every page. This layer is cheap and fully in your control. On its own it wins uncontested long-tail questions and maximises what happens when your pages are retrieved. An llms.txt file, a short map of your key pages for language models, is an optional extra here: no engine has confirmed it reads one, but our free llms.txt generator builds one in seconds.

2. Build independent corroboration

This is the GEO layer, and the decisive one on contested commercial questions. The engine needs to see your brand in the publications it retrieves for your category, in independent comparisons that include you, in reviews, and in research that other people cite. The most reliable engine for earned coverage is original data that journalists want to write about, which is what data-led digital PR produces. Digital PR is one intervention inside the wider system, not the whole answer: it earns new editorial coverage, while the programme work enters the sources engines already cite, such as comparison pages, directories and trade references.

3. Establish an authentic entity and community presence

An engine has to understand who you are before it can recommend you. Entity work makes the company, its category, its people and its products clear and consistent everywhere they appear, so the same brand is recognised across the retrieved set rather than fragmented into variants. Community presence means being where buyers already talk, contributing genuinely. Community content is among the most heavily weighted source types and the one that punishes manufacturing: platforms now detect and delete coordinated seeding retroactively, and because citation is retrieval, a deleted source stops citing you the same day.

4. Measure visibility at prompt level

Without measurement the first three layers are faith. A fixed panel of the prompts your buyers actually ask, run across each engine on a schedule, logging which brands are named and which sources are cited, benchmarked against named competitors, from a baseline captured before the work starts, with branded and non-branded prompts reported separately. Generative answers vary run to run, so the panel and the trend are the evidence, never one screenshot. The full prompt-level measurement method covers prompt design, engine coverage, logging and source classification.

The four layers, the mechanism behind them and the honest timeline for each are laid out in our guide to how to get cited by ChatGPT.

GEO vs AEO vs AI SEO: Which Should You Focus On?

Focus on the layer where your visibility is currently breaking. If your pages are not being retrieved, the problem is SEO. If they are retrieved but poorly represented, the problem is AEO. If they are retrieved and competitors are still recommended instead of you, the problem is GEO. If you do not know which of those is happening, measure before you spend on any of them.

If your content is not being retrieved

Work on SEO and retrievability. The symptoms: your pages do not rank for the underlying queries, they are not among the sources the engines cite for your category, and the brand is absent even from branded prompts. No amount of answer formatting or coverage fixes a page the engine never sees. Crawlability, indexation, relevance to the actual buyer question and domain trust come first.

If your content is retrieved but poorly represented

Work on AEO and extractability. The symptoms: your page is cited but the engine quotes the wrong passage, describes the product inaccurately, or drops your page in favour of a competitor's clearer one. Rewrite the priority pages answer-first, tighten the definitions, add the numbers and the sources, and make the entity names consistent.

If your content is retrieved but competitors are repeatedly recommended

Work on GEO: citation and entity authority. The symptoms: your site appears in the cited sources and the engine still names two or three other vendors, or you are visible on branded prompts and absent on the non-branded buyer questions. This is a corroboration problem. The fix is presence in the independent sources the engine already trusts, which no on-page change can supply.

If you do not know what is happening

Measure first. Run the prompt panel across the engines, log who is named and which sources are cited, and classify the sources as owned, earned or rented. The result tells you which of the three problems you actually have. Most teams that start with tactics are guessing at the diagnosis, and a quarter of work on the wrong layer is expensive.

What About LLM SEO, AIO and AI Search Optimisation?

LLM SEO, LLM optimisation (LLMO), AI optimisation (AIO), AI search optimisation and ChatGPT SEO are further labels for the same shift toward language-model-driven discovery. None of them describes a separate department. Treat them as synonyms for AI SEO with a different emphasis, and judge a vendor or a plan by the work it does across the four layers, not by the acronym on the proposal.

The emphasis does vary. LLM SEO and LLM optimisation stress the models themselves and what they learn from training data as well as retrieval. ChatGPT SEO narrows the same work to one engine. AI search optimisation and AIO are the broadest labels and are closest to AI SEO as this guide uses it. If you searched for what AI SEO is called, the honest answer is all of these, depending on who is speaking, and the discipline underneath is one thing: get retrieved, get extracted, get corroborated, get measured.

What Are the Common Mistakes?

Treating GEO as a content trick

Answer blocks, schema and statistics improve extraction of pages that are already retrieved. They do not manufacture the corroboration that gets a brand named on contested questions. Schema in particular is useful for entity clarity and nothing in the research shows that it causes citations on its own.

Assuming rankings automatically produce citations

Retrieval and citation are different steps, and the overlap between the organic top ten and AI citations is far lower than most teams assume. A rank tracker cannot see whether the engine named you.

Optimising only the company's own website

The website is one source class among several in the retrieved set, and it is the one the engine trusts least on its own, because it is self-interested. Programmes that never leave the domain plateau at the retrieval layer.

Measuring one screenshot instead of a prompt panel

Generative answers are probabilistic. One run that names you, or omits you, proves nothing. The panel, the schedule and the trend against a baseline are the evidence.

Creating separate strategies for every acronym

A GEO plan, an AEO plan, an LLM SEO plan and an SEO plan, each with its own agency, is four budgets for one pipeline. The work is layered, and the layers depend on each other.

Confusing AI-assisted SEO with SEO for AI search

Buying an AI writing tool is not an AI SEO strategy. The engines judge the output by the same rules, and volume without corroboration is retrieved and ignored.

How Does Ranking Atlas Approach GEO, AEO and AI SEO?

Ranking Atlas treats GEO, AEO and AI SEO as one discipline with one method: Understand, Diagnose, Establish, Build, Distribute, Measure. Every engagement starts with a call and continues on one monthly budget, with Digital PR Campaigns added where independent coverage is the missing layer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is GEO the same as AEO?

No, although the two overlap heavily. Answer engine optimisation (AEO) concentrates on making a passage easy to identify, extract and present as a direct answer. Generative engine optimisation (GEO) concentrates on getting a brand mentioned, cited and recommended inside a generated answer, which depends on independent sources as much as on the brand's own pages. Most practical programmes do both.

Is AI SEO the same as GEO?

AI SEO is the broader term. AI SEO covers visibility across every AI-powered search and discovery surface, including retrieval, extraction, citation and recommendation. GEO is the part of AI SEO concerned with being named and cited inside generated answers. Many people use the two terms interchangeably, and the terminology is not standardised.

Does AEO replace SEO?

No. AEO decides how well a page performs once an engine has retrieved it. SEO decides whether the page is retrieved at all. A page that cannot be crawled, indexed and found for the underlying query cannot be extracted as an answer, so AEO sits on top of the SEO foundation rather than replacing it.

Does ranking number one on Google guarantee a ChatGPT citation?

No. Ranking gets a page retrieved, and Ahrefs' study of 1.4 million ChatGPT prompts (April 2026) found 88% of the URLs ChatGPT cites are taken directly from search, so ranking matters. Citation is a separate step: engines cite a minority of what they retrieve and name the brands that recur across several independent sources. A top ranking on a single owned page is one vote, and it is often outvoted.

How do I get cited by ChatGPT?

Make your own pages retrievable and easy to quote, earn corroborating coverage and mentions in the independent sources ChatGPT retrieves for your category, keep an authentic presence where buyers already talk, and measure at prompt level against a baseline. Ranking Atlas covers the mechanism and the timeline in its guide to how to get cited by ChatGPT.

Is AI SEO just using AI to write content?

No. Using AI tools to generate content, analyse keywords or automate SEO workflows is AI-assisted SEO. AI SEO, as used in this guide, means optimising a brand and its sources so AI-powered search surfaces retrieve, extract, cite and recommend it. The two share three letters and very little else.

Do links still matter for GEO and AI SEO?

As part of the retrieval and authority foundation, yes. Links remain one of the ways a domain earns the trust that gets it retrieved. For being named inside answers, mentions and citations across independent sources correlate more strongly with AI visibility than link counts do, so the work shifts from counting links to earning presence in the sources engines cite.

What should I measure for GEO?

A fixed panel of the prompts your buyers actually ask, run across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and AI Overviews, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude on a schedule. Log which brands are named, which sources are cited and which competitors appear, benchmark against a baseline captured before the work starts, and report branded and non-branded prompts separately.

What is AI SEO called?

AI SEO is also called generative engine optimisation (GEO), answer engine optimisation (AEO), LLM SEO, LLM optimisation (LLMO), AI optimisation (AIO), AI search optimisation and ChatGPT SEO. The labels emphasise different parts of the same work: being retrieved, extracted, cited and recommended by AI-powered search systems.

What is AI search optimisation called?

AI search optimisation is most often called AI SEO or generative engine optimisation (GEO). When the emphasis is on being extracted as a direct answer it is called answer engine optimisation (AEO), and when the emphasis is on large language models it is called LLM SEO or LLM optimisation. All of these describe optimising for AI-powered search rather than using AI to do SEO.
