9 of 1960's top ten economies still rank in the top ten
Rank position, 1960 → 2025 · top 12 economies of 2025 · 1960 axis breaks below rank 20Total GDP measures economic size, not prosperity. The ranking correlates with population: four of the ten largest economies by output are also among the ten most populous countries (the United States, China, India, and Russia). The GDP per capita ranking divides output by population and produces a different top ten entirely, led by Luxembourg at 74th in total GDP.
9 of 1960's top ten economies remain in 2025's top ten: United States, China, Germany, Japan, United Kingdom, India, France, Italy, Canada. That stability reflects a structural concentration of output: the top three economies alone account for a disproportionate share of global GDP.
China rose from 5th in 1960 to 2nd in 2025
China ranked 5th in total GDP in 1960 and 2nd in 2025. It also ranks 2nd in military spending, consistent with the pattern that the largest economies maintain the largest defence budgets in absolute terms.
Inside the current top 20, the largest gain since 2000 belongs to Russian Federation, which moved from 20th in 2000 to 8th at $2.56 trillion.

Frequently asked questions
Which country has the largest economy in 2025?
United States leads at $30.77 trillion, followed by China at $19.5 trillion and Germany at $5.05 trillion.
How does this differ from GDP per capita?
GDP measures total economic output; GDP per capita divides that total by population. A country can rank high on total GDP but low on GDP per capita if it has a large population. The GDP per capita ranking is available as a separate dataset in this library.
Which country climbed the GDP rankings most since 1960?
Among 2025's top ten, China recorded the largest climb, rising from 5th in 1960 to 2nd in 2025. The downloadable CSV includes the complete rank history.
Are these figures adjusted for inflation?
No. Values are in current US dollars as reported by the World Bank. Changes over time reflect both real growth and US-dollar inflation; within-year rankings are unaffected.
How often is this data updated?
The World Bank publishes updated GDP estimates annually. This page is rebuilt from the latest release, retrieved July 2026.
Methodology & Fair Use
Data runs to 2025, the most recent year published by World Bank World Development Indicators.
Figures are gross domestic product in current US dollars as published in the World Bank World Development Indicators (indicator NY.GDP.MKTP.CD), retrieved July 2026. Rankings are computed among all economies with reported data for each year; economies with no reported value in a given year are excluded from that year's ranking. Because values are nominal, changes over time reflect both real growth and US-dollar inflation; within-year rankings are unaffected. Trajectory sparklines index each economy's series to its own 1960–2025 range and are not comparable in level across rows.
